S.S. Hope RI - Suicide Survivors Support Group
FAQ
Here are some common questions that newcomers may have before joining the group.
ARE ONLY RHODE ISLAND RESIDENTS ABLE TO JOIN?
No, we welcome anyone in need of our group. We do find that meeting in person is one of the best ways to get all the benefits of the group, though, so we find most people are within a comfortable commuting distance of Providence RI.
IS THERE AN ONLINE OPTION?
Yes, we are currently experimenting with bringing remote participants into the conversation via Zoom. Instructions for joining via web conference are provided via email 24 hours prior to a meet up.
DO I HAVE TO SHARE WITH THE GROUP TO ATTEND?
No one is ever expected to share. You can just come and listen, though do be ready for warm-hearted welcome and many open ears to hear your particular experience that has brought you to our group.
IS THIS A THERAPY GROUP?
No, this is not a therapy group. We are a "Support Group", which is a collection of peers who share in the same trauma, but no one has any formal therapy experience. While you may find attending "therapeutic", this group does not take the place of official therapy provided by a licensed professional.
CAN I ATTEND WITH A FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND?
Yes, all are welcome. We do assume that anyone attending the group is in their own way affected by the loss of someone from suicide, but this can take the form of a supportive family member or friend who is aware of the primary attendee's loss who is there to provide additional support. Meeting a new group of people can be difficult, and you should not have to go it alone if the presence of a friend/family member would help you to join our group.
